Working with the land around us.

An intensive workshop on observing, collecting, processing, and studying clays from the natural surroundings. The goal is not a perfect formula: it is learning to read the territory and build a research method you can take to other materials and places.

The experience

  • Read the landscape and learn to recognise possible clay deposits.
  • Collect small samples responsibly and record where they come from.
  • Dry, crush, rehydrate, sieve, and decant the material.
  • Make shrinkage bars, slips, blends, and small test pieces.
  • See how Wild Clay behaves at different temperatures.
  • Document formulas, origins, and results so the research continues after the course.

Who it's for

For ceramicists who want to develop their own materials, ceramics students, artists and designers working with land and matter, and anyone drawn to geology, landscape, and craft. No experience with Wild Clay is needed; a general ceramics base helps, but it is not essential.

The teaching team and specialist collaborations will be announced with the final program.

Program

Day 1 · Territory and collection

Introduction to Wild Clay and a walk through the land around Can Brull: reading colour, texture, and soil, collecting small samples, and recording where they come from.

Day 2 · Processing

Cleaning and preparing the clays: drying, crushing, rehydrating, sieving, and decanting, comparing quick processes with slower, more careful ones.

Day 3 · Tests and formulation

Shrinkage bars, slips, blends, and small ceramic tests. Modifying a clay with other bodies, sands, ashes, and available materials; making small pieces, surfaces, and samples from the prepared materials; and setting up a recording system to keep the research going after the course.

Practical information

What to bring
Clothes that can get dirty, closed sturdy shoes, rain protection, and a notebook for processes and formulas. The workshop combines studio work with time outdoors.
Results and firing
Wild Clay needs drying and firing times longer than the workshop itself, so the program combines pre-processed materials with the samples collected. Firing, delivery, and collection of tests will be confirmed with the final program.
