Building scale with control.

Working large is not just using more clay. As a piece grows, structure, weight, moisture, joints, and drying all change with it. An intensive workshop on building bigger forms with control.

The experience

  • Plan proportions, profiles, and the structure that keeps a large piece standing.
  • Build in stages, controlling moisture as the form grows.
  • Join, reinforce, and correct a piece while it rises.
  • Work with supports and tools suited to scale.
  • Finish surfaces and prepare a large piece for slow, crack-free drying.
  • Depending on the teacher's final approach: wheel, handbuilding, section assembly, or a mix.

Who it's for

For people with previous clay experience. You do not need to have made large pieces before, but you need basic autonomy on the wheel or in handbuilding. Especially useful for ceramicists who want to break their scale ceiling and understand the link between design, structure, and process.

The teacher and their technical specialisation will be announced with the final program.

Program

Day 1 · Design, material, and structure

References, analysis of forms, clay preparation, and the start of the pieces. How to turn an idea or drawing into a viable structure, and where the tension points will be.

Day 2 · Building and growth

Moisture control and the development of volume and height. How to hold, join, modify, and reinforce a piece while it grows.

Day 3 · Finishing and drying

Final adjustments, surface treatment, and preparing the piece for slow, controlled drying. Closing review of firing, transport, and storage strategies.

Practical information

Pieces and firing
Large pieces need long drying and cannot be fired during the workshop itself. Drying, storage, firing, and collection conditions will be shared before enrolment.
