A week around the fire.

The experience
- Learn how an anagama works and how pieces are prepared for wood firing.
- Choose positions inside the chamber and load the kiln, piece by piece.
- Seal the chamber, prepare the wood, and light the first fire.
- Feed the fire in shifts and follow temperature, atmosphere, and draft.
- Record and document the firing, through to the closing of the kiln and the start of cooling.
Who it's for
For ceramicists, advanced students, and anyone who wants to understand wood firing by doing it. No anagama experience needed, but you need to be ready for physical work, technical instructions, and a collective rhythm; some shifts can run through the night.
The team
The teaching team, participation format, and what is included will be announced with the final program.
Program
Meet the kiln, review pieces, prepare bases, and plan the load.
Place the works step by step, by size, material, form, and the effects wanted.
First fire and gradual warming of the kiln.
Shifts, wood, and the climb to high temperature.
Last loads of wood, sealing the openings, and the start of cooling.
The kiln does not open right after the firing; the opening and collection date comes with the final program.
Practical information
- Pieces
- Pieces must be completely dry, bisque-fired, made from bodies suited to 1260-1300°C, identified, and reviewed and accepted by the team. Unglazed pieces show the flame and ash best; any glaze must be high-temperature safe and must not run.
- Collective work
- Participants help with the space, the wood, order, logistics, and fire shifts, coordinated by the technical team.
Price
Price, meals, accommodation, and the volume of pieces included will be announced with the final program. People on the interest list receive it first.
Conditions
- Results in an anagama firing are not guaranteed: warping, cracks, intense marks, fused pieces, and losses are part of the process.
- Participation in fire shifts depends on each person's experience and the technical team's instructions.
